VISION & INTELLECTUAL FOUNDATIONS

Ideas have always travelled between civilizations.

ATHENS

Philosophy and inquiry

In Athens, philosophy took root. Thinkers asked fundamental questions about justice, truth, virtue and the nature of reality. Inquiry became a way of life.

BAGHDAD

Knowledge was challenged

At Bayt al-Hikma, the House of Wisdom, knowledge was translated, challenged and expanded. Scholars of the Islamic world developed original advances in science, medicine, mathematics and philosophy, creating a major centre of human learning.

FLORENCE

Renaissance Humanism

Centuries later, some of these ideas and works (including Greek texts) were transmitted, translated and commented upon across civilizations, appearing again in Florence and contributed to the birth of the Renaissance.

TODAY

Planetary Humanism

Planetary Humanism recognises that humanity shares one interdependent world. It brings human dignity into dialogue with cultural plurality, ecological responsibility and our common destiny, inviting civilizations to shape the future together without losing their distinct identities.

Inspired by Edgar Morin · One planet. Many civilizations. One shared destiny.

THE FLORENCE HUMANISM DIALOGUE

Florence meets the Arab and Islamic world again.

PART OF THE WORLD HUMANISM FORUM

The Florence Humanism Dialogue is an initiative of the World Humanism Forum, created to bring public leaders, entrepreneurs, scholars, artists and thinkers into settings designed for genuine conversation. It begins with a simple principle: meaningful dialogue requires time, trust and the freedom to speak beyond official positions.

A NEW ENCOUNTER

The Dialogue creates a contemporary encounter between Florence and the Arab and Islamic world. Neither civilization is presented as a subject to be observed. Both enter the conversation as equal protagonists, bringing distinct perspectives, shared questions and a mutual interest in shaping the future.

BAYT AL-HIKMA

Bayt al-Hikma is the intimate international expression of this vision. Around one table, a carefully selected group of guests experiences dialogue through hospitality, personal exchange, beauty and reflection.

One table. Different worlds. A conversation that continues.

THEMES

Themes we care about. Questions worth discussing.

RAHMA | رحمة

LOVE, CARE AND HUMAN DIGNITY

A renewed humanism begins by recognising vulnerability, restoring dignity and making care a principle of personal conduct and public life.

RESPONSIBILITY, GENEROSITY AND PHILANTHROPY

Philanthropy becomes stewardship, solidarity and a long-term commitment to human flourishing.

NAVIGATING THE POLYCRISIS THROUGH COMPLEXITY THINKING

Inspired by Edgar Morin, complexity thinking connects what has been separated and helps leaders act within uncertainty.

HOSPITALITY IN ARAB AND ISLAMIC TRADITIONS

From the Majlis | مجلس to Bayt al-Hikma | بيت الحكمة, hospitality becomes an ethical relationship and a foundation for meaningful dialogue.

UNITY, DIVERSITY AND PLANETARY DESTINY

Planetary humanism recognises our common humanity and the irreducible value of our differences.

KNOWLEDGE, UNCERTAINTY AND HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY

He is the author of Dear Edgar, a personal conversation with the thought of Edgar Morin about complexity, responsibility and what a renewed humanism might become.

WHY HE HOSTS THE HOUSE

Claudio hosts Bayt al-Hikma because he believes that meaningful dialogue begins with hospitality, trust and genuine human connection.
